How to add a watermark to a PDF

  1. Select your PDF. Drag it onto the box above or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded until you choose a file.
  2. Add your watermark text. Click Text Watermark, type the wording you need — Confidential, Draft, a company name, a date — then drag it into position.
  3. Style it. Set the font, size, colour and opacity. Rotate it to any angle, or switch on Repeat to tile the watermark diagonally or across the whole page.
  4. Apply and download. Hit Apply Watermarks and save the finished PDF.

Why watermark a PDF?

A watermark makes the status and ownership of a document obvious at a glance — and it survives printing, screenshotting and forwarding in a way that file metadata does not. Common reasons people use this tool:

  • Marking drafts so an unapproved version never gets mistaken for the final one.
  • Flagging confidential material before it goes to a client, a contractor or a data room.
  • Claiming ownership of proposals, designs, photography contact sheets and course material.
  • Discouraging redistribution of paid ebooks, reports and worksheets by stamping them per recipient.
  • Meeting review requirements where a document has to carry a visible status, date or reference.

Is it safe to upload my PDF?

Your file is processed on our server and is not shared with anyone. Uploads are tied to your browser session only, and processed files are removed automatically — they are not indexed, listed or kept for later. If a document is highly sensitive, the most cautious option is always to watermark it on infrastructure you control; see the WordPress plugin below.

Need to do this in bulk, or on your own site?

This tool handles one PDF at a time, by hand. If you are watermarking documents regularly — or you want it to happen automatically — WP Watermark PDF is the WordPress plugin that powers this site. It adds:

  • Bulk watermarking across an entire media library at once
  • Image and logo watermarks, not just text
  • Dynamic watermarks that stamp each WooCommerce customer’s own name or order number onto their download
  • Page targeting — all pages, odd, even, or a specific range
  • Custom font uploads and automatic backups before each run

From $39 for a single site. 14-day money-back guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free?

Yes. There is no account, no trial and no watermark of our own added to your file. The tool is free because it is built and maintained by GrandPlugins, who make the WordPress plugin version of it.

What is the maximum file size?

50 MB per PDF. Larger documents should be split first, or watermarked locally using the plugin.

Can I add an image or logo as the watermark?

The free online tool currently supports text watermarks. Image and logo watermarking is available in the WP Watermark PDF plugin.

Can the watermark be removed afterwards?

The watermark is drawn into the page content rather than added as a separate annotation layer, so it cannot be toggled off in a PDF reader. Keep your own copy of the original before watermarking — this tool does not return an unwatermarked version.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The editor works in mobile browsers, though positioning a watermark precisely is considerably easier on a larger screen.

Do you keep my documents?

No. Files are tied to your browser session and cleared automatically. See our privacy policy for detail.
